Nov. 3 Simultaneous press conference Mérida, Yucatán and San Francisco, CA
The parents, widow and children of Luis Demetrio Góngora Pat —a Mayan, indigenous father, husband, brother, son, uncle, cousin, killed by SFPD officers on April 7, 2016— will receive a community delegation from San Francisco, California in Merida, Yucatan during Day of the Day festivities to raise awareness about this international incident and their joint cross border struggle for justice.
At the press conference, a quilt made by community members in San Francisco will be delivered to the family by representatives of the Justice and Honor for Luís Góngora Pat Coalition —Adriana Camarena, Chris Carlsson, Tiny Lisa Gray-Garcia and the youth Tiburcio Garcia—as a Day of the Dead offering and a symbol of solidarity across borders in the struggle against police violence. Poor Magazine and Deecolonize Academy school of San Francisco will also be represented by members of the delegation.
At the press conference, the family attorney, Adante Pointer of the Law Offices of John Burris will provide information about the federal civil rights lawsuit filed in the United States of America on October 7th, 2016 against Sergeant Nate Steger and Officer Michael Mellone, who fatally shot Luis Demetrio Góngora Pat.
The family and their community of supporters in both countries hope that increased knowledge of the facts will generate pressure on the Attorney General and Department of Justice of the United States of America at a federal level, and the District Attorney of San Francisco, George Gascón, to pursue an independent federal investigation and press federal criminal charges against these officers.
Press conference in Mérida Yucatán will be local time 11am at Hotel Castellano Gamma Merida, Salon CID and we will connect via social media in San Francisco local time 10am at Asociación Mayab, 16thStreet and Mission.
