Inter-American Commission on Human Rights Holds Hearing on Reports of Impunity for Extrajudicial Killings in the United States of America

Justice 4 Luis Blasts San Francisco City Authorities on International Stage for Allowing Police to Kill with Impunity!

On December 7th, 2017 the Inter-American Human Rights Commission (IAHRC) held a hearing on “Reports of Impunity for Extrajudicial Killings in the United States of America.” This hearing was part of the IAHRC’s 166^th Extraordinary Period of Sessions at its Headquarters in Washington D.C.

The hearing on Reports on Impunity for Extrajudicial Killings in the US was collaboratively and successfully petitioned for by the International Human Rights Clinic of Santa Clara University Law School (SCUIHRC), the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights (RFKHR).

The hearing took place from 12:15pm-1:15pm at the headquarters of the Organization of American States in Washington DC.

Civil Society representatives spoke at the hearing in the following order:

• Jennifer Turner, ACLU Human Rights Program
• Shaun King, Writer and civil rights activist (video participation)
• Maria Hamilton, Mother of Dontre Hamilton (killed by police in Milwaukee) and founder of Mothers for Justice United
• Luis Poot Pat, Cousin of Luis Góngora (killed by police in San Francisco)
• Adriana Camarena, Civil rights activist from San Francisco
• Justin Hansford, Howard University law professor and policing expert

U.S. Government Representatives were present from the Department of State.

Next steps

The IACHR will be issuing a report on Extrajudicial Killings in the US for which it will take into consideration the testimony provided by Civil Society today. The IACHR will then make recommendations to the US, which will allow the IACHR to track implementation of its recommendations.
